The International Conference on Machine Learning and Data Mining, co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation of USA, Morningside Center of Mathematics and the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science (AMSS), CAS, was held at AMSS on June 16-19, 2008. More than 70 distinguished scholars and experts from USA, Korea and China attended the conference.
At the opening ceremony on 16, June, President of Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Prof. Guo Lei began his welcome speech by extending the warmest welcome to all the participants. Then, Prof. Guo Lei expressed his opinion on machine learning and data mining. The data-analysts, especially statisticians are facing great challenges and unprecedented opportunities in methodology, algorithm, theory as well as philosophy, and it is the right occasion to have a conference on these topics.
After introducing the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Prof. Guo Lei wished this conference would provide a much-needed venue for interactions among international researchers, particularly those in the US and the pacific region, and wished the conference a complete success.
The topics of conference covered predication, classification and regression, pattern recognition, fault detection, clustering and unsupervised learning, mining bioinformatics data, dimension reduction and model selection, etc. Through these active intellectual exchanges among researchers, common research and educational topics for further discussion and cooperation would be identified.
