Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao paid visits to four best-known senior intellectuals living in Beijing on the morning of Aug.7, 2010. One of them is Academician Prof. Wu Wentsun of Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In their talks, Wen emphasized science and talents are making a difference to a country. He attributed China's achievements in science and technology to the decades-long efforts made by the elder generation Chinese scientists. Wen praised Prof. Wu Wentsun for his simple life style and outstanding contribution to Chinese mathematics development. Wen also talked with him about his daily life and health and hoped that Prof. Wu Wentsun can live more than one hundred years. At the end of the meeting, Wen believed that Chinese mathematics can exceeds the developed country in the future.
Prof. Wu Wentsun was awarded the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award by President Jiang Zemin in 2000, when this highest scientific and technological prize in China began to be awarded. He also received the Shaw Prize in 2006. His most important contributions are to algebraic topology. The Wu class and the Wu formula are named after him. In the field of automated theorem proving, he is known for Wu's method.
