Grand Congress Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Hua Loo-Keng Held in AMSS

Grand congress commemorating the 100th anniversary of Hua Loo-Keng was held in Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences (AMSS) on Sept.17, 2010. Over 20 CAS academicians and more than 200 guests attended this event.

AMSS Vice-president Prof. Wang Yuefei  presided over the conference.

Vice-president of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Prof. Bai Chunli made an important speech first. He spoke highly of Prof. Loo-Keng Hua’s contributions to Chinese mathematics. He emphasized that mathematics, as a basic tool for logic discursion and quantitative analysis, is essential to the science and technology. AMSS should make much effort on its advantage fields and interdisciplinary researches and improve its strategic layout to advance the knowledge innovation program.

CAS Academician Prof. Guo Lei , the president of AMSS delivered an important speech. He pointed out that “Hua Loo-Keng’s Sprits” is worthy of being remembered and learned from generation to generation. AMSS, as a national comprehensive academic research center of mathematics will endeavor to make greater contributions in the fields of mathematics and systems sciences with their applications to natural science, engineering, national economy and national defense.

Prof. Hua Loo-Keng is Chinese distinguished mathematician. His research areas included number theory, complex functions of several variables, algebra, applied mathematics and so on. He worked in Tsinghua University in 1931, and then went to Cambridge University as a visiting scholar in 1936. He was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at Tsinghua University, Southwest Associated University, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and University of Illinois in USA. He was appointed as Director of the Institute of Mathematics, Dean of the department of mathematics of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Vice-president of USTC, Director of the Institute of Applied Mathematics, Vice-president of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Member of Presidium of the CAS Academic Divisions, etc. He was the member of Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and vice-president of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).He was awarded many prizes, including First Prize of National Natural Science Award of China in 1956, Cheng Jiageng Science Prize (with Academician Prof. Wang Yuan) in 1990, etc.He received the honorary degrees of doctor of science of the University of Nancy in France in 1979, the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1982, and University of Illinois in USA in 1984. He was Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Overseas Member of the US Academy of Sciences, and founding Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing world (TWAS).
