On November 2, 2011, President Guo Lei, the President of China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, met Prof. LloydTrefethen, the President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) at AMSS. Prof. GAO Xiaoshan, the Vice-president of National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences (NCMIS) attended the meeting.

At first, Prof. GUO made a concise introduction on AMSS, NCMIS and CSIAM. He expressed gratitude to him for his continuous focus on AMSS, and then hoped that AMSS, CSIAM and SIAM can strengthen cooperation to jointly push the development of applied mathematics. Then，the two sides exchanged opinions on mathematics research and related cooperation. Prof. LloydTrefethen stated that he was honored to deliver speeches for “Fengkang Distinguished Lecture”.

Prof. LloydTrefethen，invited by the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Scientific/Engineering Computing, AMSS , made a public speech titled “Chebfun: a New Kind of Numerical Computing” and a lecture titled “Robust Rational Interpolation and Pade Approximation” during his one-week visit at AMSS. 　

Prof. Trefethen obtained his PhD at Stanford in 1982, is a professor of numerical analysis and applied mathematics. He is the current chairman of SIAM, a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the National Academy of Engineering in the USA. He is head of the Numerical Analysis Group in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford and was the first winner of the Leslie Fox Prize for Numerical Analysis.
