Prof. Serge Galam gave the lecture named “Celebrating Thirty Years of Sociophysics: Can It Become a Predictive Tool?” at AMSS on Dec.12, 2012. More than 40 researchers and graduates attended the event. Prof. YANG Xiaoguang, the Vice-director of Institute of Systems Science, AMSS presided over the meeting.

In his talk, he introduced thirty years’ research work since Sociophysics initiated in 1982 .He stated probability model on opinion change and system on Group Polarization .Using his theory of dynamics opinion was successfully predicted including the victory of the no to the 2005 French referendum on the European constitution.
Prof.Serge Galam, a French theoretical physicist specialized in disordered systems, is the founding father of sociophysics, a new field of study that he envisioned and initiated more than thirty years ago. He initiated the use of physics to investigate voting in hierarchical systems, group decision making, the stability and fragmentation of alliances among countries, minority opinions spreading, rumor phenomenon, terrorism, and opinion dynamics under the influence of contrarians and inflexibles.
