The election took place at the Academy's 26th General Meeting in Vienna, Austria, on Thursday, 19 November 2015. Prof. YUAN Yaxiang was elected as the TWAS (the World Academy of Sciences) Fellow for outstanding contributions to numerical methods for nonlinear optimization, particularly to nonlinear conjugate gradient methods, trust region algorithms, quasi-Newton methods and subspace methods.

Prof.YUAN Yaxiang is the Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Corresponding Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has received the TWAS Prize in Mathematics, the Shiing S. Chern Mathematics Award, the National Excellent Science and Technology Worker of China and the J.T. Knight Prize, Cambridge, UK, among others.
