Prof. Vaughan Jones, gave a lecture titled ”The Thompson groups F and T as local scaling transformations of quantum spin chains” at AMSS on 7, June 2019.

The Thompson groups were certain groups of piecewise linear transformations of the interval and the circle. In the talk, he carefully defined them for non-experts and proposed that they were a natural candidate for local scaling groups on lattices. This led to a very interesting family of unitary representations of F and T about which some results, but quite few, were known.
