Abstract:
The year 2015 is the centenary of Einstein's theory of general relativity. Over the past one hundred years, slowly the theory is gaining a foothold in the foundation of modern physics and replace Newton's theory as an accepted theory of universal gravitation. In this talk, I will describe the simple and yet beautiful basic ideas of the theory in both mathematical (geometrical) and physical terms. To illustrate the rapid changes in the landscape of the theory, I will also describe for you the mathematical challenges of the two body problem in general relativity and the relevance of the theory to the lunar program in China.
