The Thompson groups are certain groups of piecewise linear transformations of the interval and the circle. I will carefully define them for non-experts and propose that they are a natural candidate for local scaling groups on lattices. This leads to a very interesting family of unitary representations of F and T about which some results, but quite few, are known.
