Title: Minimizing Maps and Topological Singularities

Time& Venue: 10:00-11:00 a.m. on November 13 2020  N202

Abstract: A goal of this survey lecture is to describe a couple challenging open problems over the last 3-4 decades on the subject. We shall discuss minimizing maps into spheres of various dimensions. Of particular interest are minimizing maps in homotopy classes and the related notions of "relaxed energies" and "defect measures".  We also introduce the Jacobian currents and its connection to the (local) topological singularities of maps.
